Intrigued by TH writer Kurt Ullrich's article today about a visiting author, I checked out one of his books at the public library. "Buck Wilder's Small Fry Fishing Guide" introduces children to the world of fishing via a playful presentation.

The bearded Buck Wilder character is the creation of writer Tim Smith and illustrator Mark Herrick, whose colorful, magnificently-detailed cartoons can engross young readers.

The book covers most of the popular freshwater species, including the various panfish, bass, walleye, pike and trout. It also contains a lot of fishing tidbits, along with some rudimentary — yet very real — fishing instruction and advice, including preferred habitats and the best choices for bait and lures.

Sharing the book with a child could be a fun way to spark an interest in the pastime.
